Many players use spring training to hone their skills. Pitchers, especially, like to try out new weapons--pitches they haven't used before, a new delivery. How does Randy Johnson with a changeup grab you? Could be worse, though. Babe Ruth decided one day he wanted to try hitting. The big question is how effectively the pitchers will carry over their experiments into the regular season.
Randy Johnson, Diamondbacks starting pitcher
What's new: Yes, a changeup.
How he'll use it: The Big Unit's new pitch should cut into his strikeout total. On the other hand, he'll be fresher late in the game. A groundout only takes one pitch. A strikeout takes three. Johnson probably will throw only a handful of changeups per game, but don't think batters aren't quaking anyway.
Why it's important: Johnson isn't getting any younger. The fewer pitches he throws, the longer his career will last. Great, if you're a Diamondback. Discouraging otherwise.
Jason Isringhausen, A's closer
What's new: A changeup.
