   Rocks wall me in. Their turbulent layers 
   jammed together press unbearably 
   on my head. The clammy air spawns 
   moisture beads on ledges, ridges, 
   trickles down long stone faces. 
   Feeble light and the passages ahead 
   offer a darkness more profound 
   than anything I've ever known, imagined. 
 
   Stalagmites reach from floor to roof, 
   a mean band of skeletons waiting 
   to embrace me. An owl call becomes 
   a human voice lengthened as if 
   it had travelled down a pipe: the father 
   I thought I'd escaped. His hollow sentences 
   swell, resound on the cave walls: 
   It's your own fault you're so fallen--
