Hauling trash may sound like a chore to some, but for Nowel Dudoit-Alana, owner of Kalaka Nui Inc., it's a business opportunity.

Her 10-year-old company, which specializes in aggregate hauling and container spotting, just landed a military contract for garbage removal. She expects it to add just that much more gravy to her company, which saw $1.2 million in revenue last year.

The venture is the latest milestone for Kalaka Nui -- and the woman who runs it.

Dudoit-Alana readily acknowledges that she faced some challenges when she took the helm 10 years ago, but she says she grabbed every opportunity that came along, whether it was chasing government aid or culling advice from a skeptical male colleague.
