ONE THIRD OF YOUR LIFE
"Tax Freedom Day"--the date when the composite American has worked long enough to pay off his total tax bill for the year--moved rapidly the wrong way over the last decade, according to the Tax Foundation. Whereas in 1991 Americans had to work until April 20 to cover their payments to the government, by 2001 this had been pushed to May 3.
The 123 days Americans must labor to pay taxes break down this way:
* 50 days to pay individual income taxes
* 29 days to pay Social Security taxes
* 16 days to pay sales and excise taxes
* 10 days to pay property taxes
