The book on Jimmy Rollins
The first thing most observers notice about Phillies rookie shortstop Jimmy Rollins is his stature. A 22-year-old switch hitter, Rollins is listed generously as 5-8 in the team's media guide.
Through the first month and a half of the Phillies' surprising season, Rollins has proved over and over that heart and ability have little to do with size. He has been sparkling in the field, handled a temporary move to leadoff and caught the eye of opposing coaches with his range and arm strength.
He even has clubbed three home runs--leaving him 12 shy of manager Larry Bowa's 16-season major league total (in 8,418 at-bats).
"When I saw him make a few plays, I said, `Uh, oh, that's not Desi Relaford out there any more," says one N.L. East coach.
