I always look forward to receiving your magazine and find the articles very informative and sometimes humorous. Lately I have been disappointed with the amount of space you have used in highlighting the bad behavior of lifeguards. Two of the last three "Lessons Learned" focused on the irresponsible behavior of a minority of lifeguards, and in an issue this summer the problem of alcoholism was featured.
I am not denying that these things happen, even with my own staff, but it would be nice to see some more positive examples of lifeguard behavior since we all know that these articles featured examples of the few not of the many.
It was my non-aquatic staff co-workers who receive the magazine that brought this negative perception to my attention when they said jokingly, "Are all lifeguards drunken partyers that date each other?"
I have been an aquatic professional for more than 25 years and during that time have dealt with hundreds of lifeguards. The mere fact that lifeguards are generally between the ages of 16 and 22 comes with a unique challenge, along with an opportunity to work with young, enthusiastic individuals.
Every profession has a percentage of "knuckleheads." I would just like to see some more focus on the positive than the negative, because there is certainly a lot of it out there.
