ANN ARBOR, Mich., May 31 PRNewswire-AsiaNet - Genomic Solutions Inc. (Nasdaq: GNSL), a leading, worldwide supplier of automated solutions for genomic and proteomic research, announces that the US Patent and Trademark Office has awarded the company a significant patent covering the automated hybridization of DNA microarrays.
The US Patent 6,238,910, entitled "Thermal and fluid cycling device for nucleic acid hybridization," describes an apparatus for hybridizing a DNA microarray, including the automation of thermal control and reagent introduction.
The patent also includes a method for providing agitation of fluid within the cavity to improve the hybridization results.
Hybridization is a process in which a known gene is placed on a slide, under a coverslip, then probed with unknown genes. It is the only way to determine which genes are being expressed in a cell. Automation of the procedure reduces manual handling of the coverslip slide, thus reducing the possibility of human error.
"We are pleased to add this patent to our expanding portfolio of intellectual property," notes Andrew Jakimcius, Executive Vice President for Research and Development at Genomic Solutions.
"The patent is the first granted for the automation of DNA microarray hybridization. It affirms the company's leadership in providing automated solutions for life science researchers."
