Laundry tablets, new from the detergent doctors at Tide and Wisk, are supposed to make clothes washing less of a pill. "It's all about convenience," says Lisa Kovitz, a spokeswoman for Unilever, which makes Wisk Dual Action Tablets. "There's no spilling and one less thing to think about."
They're also a means for Unilever and Procter & Gamble, the maker of Tide Rapid Action Tablets, to claim more of the $5 billion Americans spend each year on laundry detergents. (Who says grime doesn't pay?) But how well do the tablets work?
We pitted each against its brand's best liquid from previous tests: highly-rated Tide With Bleach Alternative Deep Clean Formula and Wisk Bleaching Action With ColorHold.
