The Toyota Highlander, new this year, rivals the Lexus RX300--one of our top-rated sport-utility vehicles (SUVs). Both are derived from the refined Toyota Camry sedan. The Highlander is nearly as comfortable and quiet as the Lexus, and even better in two important respects: It has more rear-seat and cargo room, and it costs thousands of dollars less.
The Highlander sells for about $26,000 to $34,000, depending on the options. The Lexus, on the other hand, can approach $40,000.
