Names such as Naturally Cranberry, Cranberry Juice Cocktail, and Cranberry Zip may lead you to believe that the one thing these juices all have in common is a good amount of the cranberry you're paying for.
But that's not necessarily true. Our tests of more than a dozen juices found that the percentage of cranberry juice in these beverages ranged from 100 percent in Mountain Sun Pure Cranberry to a measly 5 percent in that brand's Cranberry Zip.
Now 100 percent cranberry juice is very acidic and astringent, and should be diluted and sweetened. That takes a little work, but you'd know exactly how much cranberry juice is in your mix.
Brand labels don't help much. Ocean Spray Cranberry Juice Cocktail, labeled "27 percent juice," would appear to contain less cranberry juice than Apple & Eve Naturally Cranberry and After the Fall Cape Cod Cranberry, both of which are labeled "100 percent juice." Wrong. Cranberry is the only juice in Cranberry Juice Cocktail, so it's 27 percent cranberry juice. The other two are blends of several juices, and contain only about 20 and 10 percent cranberry juice, respectively.
Knowing key terms will help you read labels:
Blends. We analyzed nine blends, seven of which were labeled "100 percent juice." Our tests showed they contained anywhere from 5 to 30 percent cranberry juice. Short of ordering up a lab test, however, consumers wouldn't know those concentrations. The Food and Drug Administration requires that labels state the total percentage of fruit juice, but not the percentage of each kind of juice. Blends may or may not be 100 percent fruit juice; those that aren't use a qualifier in their name, such as "juice drink."
The ingredients list offers a clue to a blend's cranberry-juice content, since the dominant ingredients are listed first. For example, grape juice is listed before cranberry juice in Ocean Spray Cranberry Blend Premium 100% Juice. Also look for the word "flavored," a tip-off that the named juice isn't the predominant ingredient.
