The hits just keep on coming

The Mets might have a point. Maybe they've been victimized more than most teams by the new enforcement of the old retaliation rule, in which no warning is needed before an umpire can "86" a pitcher for throwing at a batter. Maybe they can make a case for self-righteousness when these incidents are taken individually.

But maybe the Mets bring some of this on themselves, too. I, for one, can't think of another team more in the middle of this season's series of plunk-jobs. Nor can I think of another team so quick to trash-talk the beanballer or beanbalee. A quick catalogue:

* April 8. Turk Wendell hits the Expos' Vladimir Guerrero. Says Wendell: "If he doesn't like it, he can freakin' go back to the Dominican and find another line of work."

* April 28. Todd Zeile is hit by the Cardinals' Mike James. Says Zeile: "It was intentional."

* April 28, same game. Wendell is tossed for throwing a pitch behind the hack of the Cardinals' Mike Matheny. Says Wendell: "When ...
