TOKYO, July 2 Asia Pulse - Medical spending in Japan reached a record 30.93 trillion ($US248.93 billion) in fiscal year 1999, the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare reported, representing a 3.7 per cent rise over the previous year, with the average person paying a 3.6 per cent more at 244,200 yen.
The ratio of medical spending to income was 8.08 per cent, exceeding the 8 per cent level for the first time.
Medical spending, especially by the elderly, has been climbing amid the economic slowdown.
