How hard is it to plug a smart card reader into a PC? I decided to find out.

I dug out my American Express Blue card reader, which I received more than a year ago but never plugged in. Knowing that reader software can crash a PC, I decided to use a spare machine at the office, and not my home machine.

I used a Compaq Deskpro running Windows 95, which is less smart card-aware than later versions of Windows. After turning off the PC as instructed, I set about plugging the reader into the PC using a brochure that said installation would take 10 to 15 minutes.
