Last week, we took a look at some of the young veterans on offense we expect to have breakout seasons. This week, we look at the other side of the ball.
Defensive end--John Abraham, Jets
This converted linebacker has put on about 15 pounds in the offseason and now is in the 270-pound range. Last year, as a rookie playing outside linebacker in a 3-4 scheme, Abraham demonstrated special pass-rush skills before a hernia injury forced him to miss the last 10 games.
This is a return to the position Abraham excelled at in college at South Carolina. He has all the makings of an outstanding end.
Defensive end--Erik Flowers, Bills
This second-year player will get a chance to start now that Marcellus Wiley no longer is with the team. The Bills' new scheme suits Flowers better than last season's because Flowers will be asked to play on the edge and speed-rush. Bills coach Gregg Williams says Flowers has had a phenomenal offseason.
Another end who could break through is Leonard Little of the Rams. Watch for new line coach Bill Kollar to get through to Little.
Defensive tackle--Lional Dalton, Ravens
This wide body fits the Ravens' mold for defensive tackles, and he'll get plenty of playing time because the team has to rotate the big guys to keep them fresh. Dalton will be surrounded by the best group of defensive players in the NFL, so his abilities should be maximized.
