Internet-based companies commonly offer services to store AEC project files. Through these services you can store documents in a single location that is accessible to all project team members. In addition, many such vendors offer tools that make managing and collaborating on projects easier. The combination of document storage and management tools can greatly benefit projects with team members in diverse geographic locations.
This month, we look at two AEC project and collaboration tools: Project|Center by Bricsnet (www.bricsnet.com) and Projectmates (www.projectmates.com) by Systemates, Inc. Project-hosting services allow geographically dispersed team members to share information, documents, and drawings. Your entire project team, including architects, engineers, owners, and contractors, can communicate and share documents from anywhere in the world that Internet access is provided. I used a T1 connection to visit the sites, and both worked well. Broadband links such as T1, DSL, and cable modems are ideal for working with hosted sites.
