THE NBA DRAFT
Before Michael Jordan was Air Jordan, long before he was winning six NBA championships as the greatest player of a generation and long, long before he was in charge of an NBA franchise, he was a North Carolina Tar Heel.
No matter, though. Jordan needs to draft a Dookie.
As the president of basketball operations for the Wizards, winners of last month's lottery, Jordan gets to dictate who the first pick in the draft will be. Though the top half of the draft is teeming with talent, that talent has "project" plastered all over it.
Except for Shane Battier, that is. Battier, who spent four years on a college campus and was the consensus player of the year after leading Duke to the national title, is ready to play. And play well. Now.
He might not run as fast or jump as high or dunk as hard as Eddie Griffin, Kwame Brown or Tyson Chandler, but he is 6-8, versatile, smart, athletic and a deadly long-range shooter
The Wizards need a sure thing. They've tried gambling, and they just aren't that lucky. There's a lot to be said for hope and promise, but instant gratification isn't all that bad.
