Rooftop cargo boxes are an easy way to haul what won't fit in your trunk this vacation season. The largest among the 15 tested in this report offers 20 cubic feet of room. And many of the latest models are reasonably easy to attach, load, unload, and remove. But that extra space comes at a cost. A cargo box's added wind resistance reduced fuel mileage in our tests.
Worse, the box and its contents make a vehicle more top-heavy, raising its center of gravity. That can increase the risk of a rollover for many sport-utility vehicles, which are already rollover-prone.
