Hiking shoes are the SUVs of footwear: Much of their appeal lies in their rugged appearance and take-no-prisoners image. And like SUVs, many hiking shoes are bought by people who travel over terrain no rougher than an occasional city pothole. But serious hikers need serious shoes, those that offer thick, rugged soles; good traction; effective lacing; stability; and protection against rocks and water. In the spectrum of footwear for outdoor trekking, all 17 shoes that we tested for this report (in both men's and women's versions) fall between walking shoes and backpacking boots.
