* New benchmarks in energy-efficiency. The Department of Energy (DOE) has new high-efficiency standards for room air conditioners made after Oct. 1, 2000. Some units exceed those requirements.
* Many older models still available. Air conditioners made earlier in 2000 can still be sold, and plenty remain in stores.
* Lots more electronic controls. Even many moderately priced models can be set to maintain a specific temperature or switch on and off at specified times.
