The four-door Ford Explorer, America's most popular sport-utility vehicle (SUV), has been fully redesigned for model year 2002--and not a moment too soon, given the fallout over rollovers associated with the old Explorer and recalled Firestone tires. (The two-door model, the Explorer Sport, still relies on the old design.)

The new Explorer is somewhat bigger, with an independent suspension and an optional third seat. Our Explorer XLT, with typical options, cost $32,600. It has Michelin tires.

The most significant improvement is the controlled and quiet ride. By contrast, Explorers from model years 1990 to 1994 were soft and bouncy; those from 1995 to 2001 were hard and choppy. The new Explorer also ...
