PORT CHARLOTTE -- Alpha Center, the charter school plagued by financial mismanagement and administrative turnover, was shut down by the Charlotte County School Board on Tuesday.

Despite pleas from parents and students and a new financial plan from an Arizona-based company hoping to rid the school of its $1.3 million debt, the board voted unanimously to revoke its charter with the school.

In a combative back and forth between School Board members and Alpha Center advocates, both sides argued on behalf of the school's 160-plus at-risk students, most of whom haven't been successful in…
