Medicaid spending may swell to around 10% annually "in the near future," in part because nursing home costs are expected to increase, according to a new report.

Researchers from the Washington-based Urban Institute said Medicaid spending on nursing homes is likely to increase because the current nursing shortage would drive up labor costs. In addition, patients are sicker than ever before and need more costly treatment. And legislatures that mandate staffing increases for facilities will have to pay for them...
