A lesbian couple's dream to fly around the world ends in tragedy, but their pioneering spirit continues to inspire their hometown
When Gwen Bloomingdale and Barbara Gard of Provincetown, Mass., first read about the prestigious London to Sydney Air Race, which spans half the globe, in a yellowed issue of National Geographic, they decided to go even farther. The avid pilots and life partners would race from London to Sydney, beginning March 11, and then keep flying until they reached home again, on the other side of the world.
They had bought their twin-engine Aero Commander because its wings sit high on the cabin, offering a 180-degree view of everything below. They planned to fly at low altitudes so the digital cameras they'd installed in the cockpit could capture images of the adventure for their countless supporters and loved ones. And somewhere along the way, they found matching rings that read DARE DREAM DISCOVER--words the couple lived by.
