Forget, for a moment, the fun-with-numbers home run pace we're seeing from Barry Bonds and Luis Gonzalez. Let's talk about the 40-40 pace being set by Ryan Klesko.
After he stole three bases against the DiamondbacKs last Thursday, Klesko was on a pace to finish with 45 steals and 41 home runs.
Only three other players in the history of the game have had 40-40 seasons: Alex Rodriguez (1998), Bonds (1996) and Jose Canseco (1988).
"That man," says Bruce Bochy, Klesko's manager, "can flat punish a baseball. Some of the balls he's hitting are scary."
But the home runs aren't the surprise here. Klesko has had bust-out power potential since his minor league days. The real stunner, to me, is the steals.
This is a guy who has never stolen more than 23 bases in a season. Before he pilfered that many last year, he never even had been in double figures in steals as a major leaguer.
Canseco and Bonds were slugging, fleet outfielders in their 40-40 seasons. Rodriguez was a shortstop with power and speed to burn.
