We caught up with veteran wine marketer Dennis Canning over lunch at Chalet Basque in San Rafael, across the Bay from San Francisco. Canning brought along his new wines that were in test markets for the last half of 2000 and will be rolled out in national markets this month (January).
He set the three bottles on the table and the waitress prepared to attack with her corkscrew. When she realized the bottles were closed with a screw cap--lurking under an attractive capsule to be sure--she said, "But this is a cheap wine."
Well, yes. But not in the sense she meant. There's a Brit phrase describing a wine as "cheap and cheerful" that exactly fits Willow Cove, Canning's latest venture into the wine market.
The reaction of the waitress shows what promoters of screwtop closures are up against, but if she had taken a closer look, never mind a sip of wine, she would have had a different reaction altogether.
