Under pressure from liberal politicians and interest groups, the IRS has been attacking conservative churches and religious organizations for a decade now, threatening to revoke their tax-exempt status if they become involved in politics. An evangelical church in upstate New York was given the "death sentence" by the IRS after it ran a newspaper ad questioning Bill Clinton's positions on social issues. More recently, the Christian Coalition was refused tax exempt status by the IRS (though similar groups like the Planned Parenthood Action Fund and the Democratic Leadership Council have had no such trouble).
For some reason, left-wing churches haven't come under the same IRS pressure as conservative congregations. Consider some snapshots from the recent election:
