A.G. Smith, "How Toxic Is DDT?" and D.R. Roberts, S. Manguin, and J. Mouchet, "DDT House Spraying and Reemerging Malaria," in The Lancet (July 22, 2000), 84 Theobald's Road, London WC1X 8RR, England.
An early triumph of the environmental movement was the banning of DDT, now outlawed in all industrialized countries and much of the Third World. But two studies argue DDT is a safe pesticide, useful in combating malaria.
Smith, a toxicologist at Britain's Leicester University, notes "there are few other chemicals that have been studied in as much depth as DDT." Evidence shows that DDT is less toxic than such well-known pesticides as dieldrin. Would-be suicides who have consumed massive amounts of DDT found the chemical causes vomiting but not death. Nor is there any evidence DDT causes cancer in humans. "DDT can cause many toxicological effects" Smith writes, "but the effects on human beings at likely exposure levels seem to be very slight."
