S KOREA'S CONSUMPTION TAX COLLECTION FALLS SLIGHLTY IN 2000
SEOUL - South Korea collected less in consumption taxes last year than it did in 1999 because of the economic downturn, the National Tax Service said. The government collected 10.54 trillion won (US$8.41 billion) in traffic, special excise taxes and liquor taxes in the first 11 months of last year, down 2.3 percent compared to the 10.79 trillion won collected during the same period the year before. The tax service said the drop was caused by decreased consumer activity following Daewoo Motor's bankruptcy, the fall in semiconductor prices and unstable oil prices.
