CANBERRA, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - Consumers had yet to see significantly cheaper milk prices from the dairy deregulation that has ripped $A2 billion ($US1.09 billion) out of regional Australia, the Australian Milk Producers Association (AMPA) said.
AMPA president John Cartwright hit back at claims by Prime Minister John Howard that retail milk prices had fallen substantially while farmers were being helped by a $1.7 billion federal rescue package.
It follows an Australian Bureau of Agricultural and Resource Economics (ABARE) report which earlier this week found farm incomes had been cut by up to 30 per cent since deregulation began in July last year.
Mr Howard said yesterday consumers had benefited from substantial falls in milk prices.
But Mr Cartwright said milk prices had climbed 11 per cent in the past two years in NSW and almost 45 per cent in Victoria since 1995 when the first elements of deregulation were introduced.
