CEBU CITY, Feb 1 Asia Pulse - The use of cellular phones that may have started out as a fad among teenagers, such use of the cellular phones is now becoming a big time business for telephone companies.
As of December 2000, the number of cellphone subscribers in Central Visayas exceeded that of traditional landline subscribers by over seven percent, according to figures from the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC)-7.
The five providers in the region -- Globe Telecom, Smart Communications, Islacom, Piltel and Extelcom -- had a combined 240,280 subscribers.
This compares with the 224,171 subscribers that the seven landline providers had.
Central Visayas groups Cebu, Bohol, Negros Oriental and Siquijor.
Jesus Laureno, chief of enforcement and operation, attributed the surge in cellphone usage to the availability of the prepaid service.
