Potting soil with added time-released fertilizer is one of life's little problem solvers: You don't have to remember a fertilizing schedule or wonder about under- or overfertilizing. We tested Scotts Potting Soil Plus Fertilizer, $3.79 for 10 quarts, and the similar Miracle Gro Potting Mix (made by Scotts), $3.39 for 8 quarts. We compared them with plain potting soil, $3 for 10 quarts, and also with plain potting soil to which we added Osmocote Extended Time Release Fertilizer, $5.99 for 114 pounds. We used Osmocote's instructions for transplanting.
We tested over the summer, growing flowers from seedlings and from seeds, and six varieties of tomato plants in containers.
Flowers that grew in the soil with premixed fertilizer were taller and fuller and had more blooms that the rest. Plants grown in our own blend of potting soil and fertilizer yielded full and leafy plants, but they didn't bloom. We may have overfertilized. That's a common problem when you ...
