Getting Personal With Oprah We were gratified that Oprah fans liked our cover story. "My O, my O, what a great article and cover picture!" exulted one. Why is the queen of talk so beloved? "Hers is a much-needed voice in this world," a reader declared. Another called her "a shining example of a woman who not only likes what she does but also chooses to share her wealth and knowledge." Then there was this heartfelt paean: "Estrogen rules! Bless Oprah for teaching that it's OK to be a woman." But not everyone was enthusiastic. More than one reader chided us as this one did: "Oprah is a media star, but NEWSWEEK should look behind her carefully groomed myth, not lovingly burnish it." Oprah the Ubiquitous Thank you, NEWSWEEK, for the Special Report on Oprah Winfrey ("The Age of Oprah," WOMEN OF THE 21ST CENTURY, Jan. 8). It is so refreshing to read about a celebrity as popular as Oprah who can take risks while not losing sight of her goals, and who makes such an effort to send the right messages to her fans.
