Convergence--the heralded melding of print and broadcast media with the Internet--is likely to take years to develop, if it happens. Marketers have tried to jump-start the process with the Cue Cat, a plastic bar-code reader that's free at RadioShack stores. As we went to press, 2 million Cue Cats had been distributed, with 10 million expected by the end of December. Attach the Cue Cat to your PC (a Mac version is in the works), and scanning specially coded ads or articles in Wired, Forbes, or Parade Magazine takes you to a page on the web where you can learn more and possibly buy the products online. Codes are also planned for newspapers and TV stations, for users who connect their TV to a computer.
