* '98-99 Cadillac DeVille
Side-impact air bags could deploy suddenly and unexpectedly.
Models: 224,000 cars made 3/4/97 to 8/2/99. According to Cadillac, there have been 306 reports of inadvertent air-bag deployment. A driver or right-front passenger sitting in a proper position and wearing the safety belt could receive minor injuries should the bag deploy. However, if a person is sitting too close to an inflating air bag, more-serious injuries could occur.
What to do: Dealer will replace side-impact sensing modules beginning in April (when parts are expected to become available). General Motors is advising car owners to call their dealer to schedule a service appointment as soon as they receive a letter asking them to do so. Customers with questions can call the company toll-free at 877 250-1790. Until repairs are made, be sure to sit in proper position (as stated in owners manual) and avoid leaning on doors. Driver may receive warning before unexpected deployment. In normal operation, air-bag light on instrument panel flashes for a few seconds when car is started. If light stays on, pull off road, turn off engine, and call 800 882-1112 to arrange for free towing to nearest Cadillac dealer. Do not attempt to restart car.
