2000 HIGHS AND LOWS

BEST SURPRISE: Lamar Smith, RD, Dolphins. He wasn't slated as even the No. 2 guy going into training camp, but he emerged as the starter and had a career year.

BIGGEST BUST: Antowain Smith, RD, Bills. Take away hisseason-finale 147-yard, three-TO performance against the Seahawks, and he had 207 yards and one TD.

BEST BAND-AID: Marcellus Wiley, DE, Bills. With the departure of Bruce Smith, he had some huge shoes to fill. The fourth-year pro delivered by more than doubling his career high for sacks with a team-leading 10.5.

MOST PAINFUL INJURY: Rob Johnson, QB, Bills. Doug Flutie played well, but Johnson's injury-filled season did nothing but further Buffalo's silly QB controversy.

PLAY TO REMEMBER: Jets RB Curtis Martin, not even gripping the laces of the football, hitting Wayne "Flashlight" Chrebet in the back of the Tampa Bay end zone with 52 seconds left for a 21-17 win in Week 4.

PLAY TO FORGET: Ravens' Chris McAlister's 98-yard TD return off a horrible pass by Jets QB Vinny Testaverde on Sunday. Basically, it killed the Jets' season.
