Athletes to watch in the year ahead, as captured by TSN photographers
Baseball
Ryan Anderson Mariners
Go ahead and ask Ryan Anderson if he's a basketball player. Everyone else does. But don't be surprised if the 6-11 lefthanded pitcher comes high and tight with sarcasm.
"No, I'm a horse jockey," or "No, do you play miniature golf?" are two of Anderson's favorites. But don't worry, Anderson says it with a smile.
"Basketball was my goal in high school," he says. "Basketball is still my true love. If I could quit and be as good of an athlete in basketball as I am in baseball, then I would rather do that. But I guess baseball is my future. God gave me an arm, and I'm going to have to use it."
Baseball consumes Anderson as he makes his way through the Mariners' organization. He is expected to make it to the big leagues next season after finishing 5-8 with a 3.98 ERA at Class AAA Tacoma last season. He walked 55 in 104 innings, but he also struck out 146.
