The state fire marshal's office has determined that arson started a fire that damaged a house and motor home on Palmetto Drive in Port Charlotte last weekend.

Investigators suspect the fire was started with gasoline, said Dee Hawkins, a spokeswoman for Charlotte County Fire/EMS.

The 1,840-square-foot house, 511 Palmetto Drive N.E., was recently vacated by a tenant who was evicted, Charlotte County Fire Chief Dennis Didio said.

It was built in 1957 and its appraised value is about $62,000, property appraiser records show.
