MANILA, Jan 2 Asia Pulse - The Asian Development Bank (ADB), Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) and the World Bank (WB) have committed to help the Philippine government effectively implement 197 foreign-assisted developmental projects worth P645 billion (US$12.99 billion).
Socio-Economic Planning Secretary Felipe Medalla, who chaired the recent official development assistance portfolio review, expressed optimism that with support from donors, the government could double disbursement in 2001 to improve ODA performance in terms of implementation efficiency and development effectiveness.
Data shows the Philippine government has already disbursed $756 million in ODA during the first three quarters of the year against last year's $692 million.
"I have no reason to doubt that we can achieve more and sustain improvement through time," Medalla said.
Medalla said, though, that there are still a lot of things to be done to speed up long-delayed projects and catch up with the disbursement backlogs.
"We need to further improve the disbursement of poverty reduction projects so that the poor could truly benefit from health, education, child care projects and other social services at the community level," WB country director for the Philippines Vinay Bhargava said.
