If all the albums of string music in the world were laid end to end, some hot new group would try to re-record them. No need to re-record this collection, though. It's splendid from end to end and contains almost every short favorite for strings you can name. The amazing thing is that it was recorded so long ago, 1957 and 1962, by Vanguard Classics. They were good then and they're good now.

Every performance is just as lively and winning as you'd expect from this group, Antonio Janigro and I Solisti di Zagreb, and from this repertoire. The program starts with a zestful rendition of Albinoni: "Concerto a cinque in B-flat Major," with sonics of startling presence. The ...
