After a few minutes listening to the overture I was thinking "This is pretty typical movie sound from the '60s, bright and hard and lean." Then I listened to the first vocal number, and the voices and orchestra sounded remarkably smoother and more natural. "What gives?" I wondered. Part of the answer lay in the booklet insert. The movie was made in 1963, but the songs were re-recorded for the album when the film was released in 1964. Maybe the overture was a leftover from the film. In any case, most of the disc sounds great.
And it should sound great. The songs were written by Sammy Cahn and James Van Heusen; the music was arranged and conducted by Nelson Riddle; the singers were ...
