Judging by the picture of Keith Lockhart on the album cover, he's getting younger by the minute. I wish he'd shown a little more youthful vitality in his music-making, though. I found the Latin-inflected works on this program just a trifle on the stuffy side.
The pieces included on the disc represent many of the countries south of the U.S. border, mainly Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, and Chile. There are fourteen selections in all, and while I don't wish to bore you with an appraisal of all of them, let me just highlight a few. The collection starts with two Argentine pieces, "Malambo" by Alberto Ginastera and "Oblivion" by Astor Piazzolla. They are given bigger, more symphonic treatments than I thought they deserved. Two outstanding works, though, are "Granada" by Agustin Lara and "Son de la Negra" arranged by Silvestre Vargas and Ruben Fuentes. In both of these pieces the orchestra is augmented by the ...
