Bedrich Smetana's series of tone poems celebrating his native Bohemia (Czechoslovakia), Ma Vlast (My Homeland), written in 1874, has always been one of my favorite pieces of music. But I cheat. Whenever I listen, I usually find myself only playing three of the six movements: the opening "Vysehad," or "High Castle"; the popular second section, "Vltava, or "The Moldau"; and the fourth work, "From Bohemia's Meadows and Forests." These are the most naturalistic parts, the narration of a bard, the harp, describing a mythical castle, said to have been the seat of ancient princes; then the flowing of the river Moldau through the heart of the country; and finally the pastoral representation of the Czech countryside. The other three parts tell of old legends and fighting for freedom, which at times can become a bit too loud and boisterous for me.
