Haydn's Symphonies 88 and 89 fall between his "Paris" symphonies, Nos. 82-87, and his final "London" symphonies, Nos. 93-104. No. 89 is fairly typical of the composer, but No. 88 is the real charmer. It is especially beautiful, and delightful, in its second-movement Largo, a piece about which Brahms was moved to declare, "I want my Ninth Symphony to be like this!" The rest of the work is equally surprising and inventive, as is the filler, the Sinfonia concertante in B flat.
