The late-19th-century Hungarian composer Karl Goldmark was quite popular in his time but doesn't get much recognition today except for his Violin Concerto and maybe his "Rustic Wedding" Symphony. Still and all, there is much to enjoy in his output, and we can thank companies like CPO for reminding us that there's life in the old boy yet.
This is CPO's second volume of Goldmark's pieces for violin and piano and for solo piano. The program begins with the Sonata for Violin and Piano, op. 25, a work that recalls the idyllic afternoons of turn-of-the-century salon music.
