If anyone's jazz would make appropriate vehicles for symphonic treatment, it would be Duke Ellington's. This new EMI disc features arrangements for 12 of Ellington's works, arranged and orchestrated by noted composer and performer Luther Henderson, who worked with Ellington in the past. Sir Simon Rattle leads his old band, the City of Birmingham Symphony, rather than his new group, the Berlin Philharmonic. Somehow, I can't really picture the Berlin Philharmonic swinging.
Anyway, the question must be asked, "Does this group really swing?" The answer is a straightforward, unambiguous "maybe." It depends on which piece you're talking about. Frankly, I was disappointed in two of Ellington's signature tunes, "Take the `A' Train" and "Things Ain't What They Used To Be." I thought the vastness of the orchestrations swamped the essential life the works, rendering them impressive museum specimens rather than vital pop songs. Even ...
