In the disc's main attraction, Lorin Maazel leads the VPO in a languorous performance of Stravinsky's original 1911 version of Petrouchka. In 1947 the composer rescored the piece for a smaller ensemble to clarify the texture, but here we have the full orchestral rendition. Maazel takes the ballet at a quieter, more dreamy pace than many interpreters, yet it still conveys most of the work's colorful interludes with sparkle and charm. However, it is really the second work on the disc that catches one's attention, Le Chant du rossignol (The Song of ...
