TAIPEI, Aug 1 Asia Pulse - President Chen Shui-bian has responded favorably to an invitation by the National Press Club (NPC) of the United States to address the prestigious club in Washington, D.C., one of Chen's top secretaries said Tuesday.
Chen told NPC Chairman Richard A. Ryan that he would be "most happy and honored to accept" the invitation to appear as a luncheon speaker at the club, according to Eugene Chien, deputy secretary-general of the Presidential Office.
Chien noted, however, that it is up to the U.S. State Department to decide whether Chen will be allowed to go to Washington or not. No senior Taiwan official has ever been permitted to enter the U.S. capital.
In the invitation issued in early July, Ryan expressed hope that the president could visit the club as early as September or October, Chien added, noting that as the invitation or permission is not under Taipei's control, the Presidential Office has not acted on the issue.
