TAIPEI, Aug 1 Asia Pulse - Taiwan's agricultural trade totaled US$10.87 billion in 2000, down 29.7 per cent from the peak level posted in 1996, according to statistics released recently by the Cabinet-level Directorate General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS).
In 2000, the country's agricultural exports totaled US$3.28 billion, while its agricultural imports hit US$7.59 billion, an average decrease of 10.3 per cent and 4.9 per cent, respectively, from the 1995 levels, the tallies showed.
Meanwhile, agricultural trade as a percentage of the country's overall merchandise trade also fell from 7.2 per cent to 3.8 per cent due to the rise of telecommunications and electronics sectors in the global market.
