OVERVIEW:
Australia is highly dependent on trade, with trading ties established with about 200 countries.
About half a billion tons of cargo are moved annually, 50 million tons of which are loaded and discharged between Australian ports.
In volume terms, 99 per cent of Australia's imports arrive by sea and 96 per cent of its exports leave by waterborne transport.
Australia is serviced by major shipping lines transporting goods worldwide, to and from the major ports of Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Adelaide and Fremantle.
