SOME YEARS AGO I reviewed the first volume of Ray Monk s life of Bertrand Russell, which took his life up to near the end of 1921. I said that it was clearly the best biography of Russell to be published so far. (It was the fourth.) But at the end of the review I also said: "the compelling portrait that Monk paints is noticeably darker than earlier depictions"; and further quoted him as saying "the personality thus revealed is one that many will find repellent".
